This exceptionally brief item was originally published in the August 3, 1909 Indianapolis Star. This article focuses on the Merkel Team of motorcycle racers and their star rider - champion amateur rider Stanley Kellogg. Headquartered in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, the company was coming to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's first motorcycle race meet in part to show off their new "Flying Merkel" double-cylinder machine. Excuse me for doing this, but I have a thing about trying convert this history from black and white to color. Merkel's team color was orange - both the bikes and the team's sweaters.
