1913 Indianapolis 500

At the time of this writing it is April 2013. As a way of commemorating history I want to provide a look back 100 years day-by-day to share the events that were taking place throughout the month of May 2013.


 
These attachments contain two articles from the May 12, 1913 Indianapolis News concerning the buildup to the May 30 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.
 

These attachments include two articles from the Indianapolis News and one from the Indianapolis Star, all published on May 13, 1913.
 

Bob Burman in his Keeton racer, Charlie Merz and Don Herr of the Stutz team were the big buzz generators of the prior day and both the Indianapolis Star and the Indianapolis News focused on their activities in their May 14, 1913 coverage of the upcoming Indianapolis 500 on May 30.

Five of the six attachments here are articles from the May 15, 1913 Indianapolis News evening paper. The sixth item, a "Motor Way" news digest column, is from the Indianapolis Star. All contatin articles that were part of the build-up to the May 30, 1913 Indianapolis 500. The articles underscore the tremendous interest in European competitors in the upcoming race.
 

This collection of May 16, 1913 articles contains five articles, three from the Indianapolis News and two from the Indianapolis Star - all about events leading up to the May 30, 1913 Indianapolis 500.
 

With the arrival of the awe-inspiring Peugeot team practice for the 1913 Indianapolis intensified on May 16. The four attachments offer four articles as well as some images from both the Indianapolis Star morning newspaper as well as it's evening competitor (they were seperate companies at the time) Indianapolis News. These articles were all published May 16, 1913.
 

May 18, 1913 was a Sunday and as the Indianapolis News, an evening paper, did not publish on the Sabbath. The two attachments here contain articles from the Indianapolis Star about events leading up to the May 30, 1913 Indianapols 500.
 

The May 19, 1913 Monday morning Indianapolis Star reported that an amazing 10,000 fans (or "bugs" as the papers called them in the day) flocked to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the day before to watch in amazement the speeds attained by the daring drivers preparing for the May 30 Indianapolis 500.

The big news for May 20, 1913 with respect to practice for the 1913 Indianapolis 500 was the arrival (finally) of Belgian driver Theodore Pilette and his smooth-running Chicago Auto Club Mercedes-Knight racer. In two of the four articles contained in the attachments below Pilette's much anticipated appearance is described.
