More on 100 Years Ago...

05/16/2013

Another entry in my 100 years ago at the Brickyard series.
May 16, 1913 - The Peugeot works team stormed the Brickyard on their first day of practice for the Indianapolis 500. They immediately busted off the fastest laps of the month. Drivers Jules Goux and Paul Zuccarelli startled their competitors and railbirds alike with average lap times above 87 MPH. A potential Achilles' Heel emerged as the French cars experienced alarming tire wear. Peugeot's closest speed threat was Stutz with driver Gil Anderson leading the charge. The Mercer and Case teams also hit the bricks for the first time that month with the previous year's hard luck driver Ralph DePalma garnering most attention. DePalma was captain of the Mercers with teammates Spencer Wishart and Caleb Bragg. Case team leader Louis Disbrow was joined by teammates Joe Nikrent and "Farmer" Bill Endicott.
