05/29/2013

May 29, 1913 - The day before the third running of the Indianapolis 500 time trials continued as drivers and cars qualified for the race by proving they could turn a lap at 75 MPH. Local newspapers reported that Jules Goux (Peugeot) and Bob Burman (Keeton) were among the top drivers who qualified the day prior. Officials scrambled to put everything they needed into place including a state-of-the-art telegraph and telephone communications system led by Western Union. A big staff of workers, including 150 scoreboard men were given their instructions. The city was overrun with out-of-town guests as hotels were pressed beyond capacity. Residents let rooms and others slept in their cars as the big race captured the entire city's imagination - and enthusiasm.
